In addition to this scientific appraisal of the material realm, esotericists are challenged to "work lovingly with substance", meaning to develop an awareness of the inner spiritual vitality awaiting expression through matter.

Spiritual means living with the energy of life-wherever you are. It means seeing the common ground between the law of eternal giving and fire, so that one's day-to-day life becomes a flaming sacrifice. There must be action; there must be spiritual livingness. Esoteric study and esoteric knowledge that lead to skill in action is good, but they are neither necessary nor sufficient. Spiritual livingness does not require book learning. It requires the Lion Heart. It requires loving our brothers.

The recent study of the French scientist Jacques Benveniste into homeopathy led him to the discovery that "water can store and 'remember' electromagnetic and biological information". His work suggests that water can be imprinted with "zones of coherence" which enable it to function in some manner as a communication system within both the cell and the body. The efficacy of homeopathic medicine could be seen to support this idea of the "memory of water".

Henri Dunant - 1828-1910: A Forerunner -- Dale McKechnie
At a pivotal time in his life he had seized the moment and set in motion that which he came into the world to do. It is obvious that, like many forerunners, he was inspired by a strong urging of the soul. In his memoirs he observed that while writing his momentous book "I was as it were lifted out of myself, dominated by a superior power, and inspired by the breath of God."
