Why is the capacity to choose of such vital importance? Many spiritual attributes are acquired in learning to make wise choices; free will is an inherent and inviolable human right, and this means that the human being must live with the consequences of his choices and preferences, good or bad.

In 1961, the family and their assistants uncovered another important skull at Olduvai. This skull was more like that of early Homo sapiens, which indicated that it was more advanced than the skull discovered in 1959 and yet it was also 250,000 years older. This, along with other evidence they found, caused the Leakeys to propose that millions of years ago several different forms of hominids coexisted in the same area over the same time period, some more ape-like, some more human-like.
