Darjeeling Goodwill Animal Shelter

The Darjeeling Goodwill Animal Shelter [DGAS] in Kalimpong, near Darjeeling, India is a centre for the healing and care of animals. The Shelter, which started in 1997, was founded by Christine Townend together with a team of local trustees. The DGAS Trust “aims to promote awareness of the divine interconnectedness of humanity with the other kingdoms of nature”. Four trained staff work at the shelter alongside the, usually volunteer, veterinarians.

Situated amongst beautiful gardens in the rural area of Bong Busty, the Shelter “rescues suffering street animals, provides free or minimal cost treatment for local animals belonging to neighbouring villagers, and operates a dog sterilisation and vaccination programme to create a rabies-free environment and an acceptable street dog population in accordance with World Health Organisation guidelines.” Since 1997, rabies has been virtually eliminated from Kalimpong town. The Shelter also runs anti–rabies vaccination programmes for dogs in Darjeeling.

“A very simple multi-faith shrine room” will soon be constructed at the Shelter.
